Taxing disabled class
Jul 13th, 2010 at 9:46am

Have taken delivery of some ex motability stock and since they are disabled class, is there a quick way to get these taxed other than going to DVLA and putting our name on the V5 as an owner?

Obviously the only purpose to taxing is for people to be able to take test drives, we do not have trade plates otherwise there would be no issue.

Any advice or pointers welcome.

Must point out these will not be used for disabled use again so the class would need to be changed.

I have taxed cars using the green new keeper supplement before and the guy doesn't bother stamping them but from what I hear he wont be able to issue tax is the class is disabled

Afraid once the disabled person sells the car if a non disabled person takes the car on, that tax disc becomes null and void.

GJM I would suggest you apply for some trade plates PDQ. You cant really take people on test drives in an untaxed car or you run the risk of committing a motoring offence and subsequent points or a fine? So does your customer.

There is no tax on the vehicles, they were delivered by wagon and have not been on the road so no offences being commited.

I've never used an uninsured or untaxed car on the road and not about to start.  I hold a clean licence and I would prefer to keep it that way.

I doubt would get trade plates at the moment as not exactly set up so well but that is another story in itself...a novel infact...councils...don't you love them!

So back to the original question, if I go to the PO with the green slip, I will not be able to buy tax?

I've heard conflicting tales on this one, obviously I will be trying it later but thought would check to see what other peoples experiences were

You need to go to VRO as the taxation class has to be changed on the V5. If you want to tax the car it will have to be registrered. Dont worry, VRO are motor traders friend. No hassle, I even go just to tax ordinary cars to avoid "hassle" with local post office and trade insurance. Fortunately for me I go passed one in Chelmsford on my way to auctions, not as easy for everyone I know!  Undecided

Sorry GJM I must have got the wrong end of the stick. I thought this was stock that would require test drives but now had unclassified tax.

No probs, our VRO is some distance away so had hoped could tax at the PO, however I never even tried, just went to the VRO but had to add ourselves to the V5, not ideal.

I got a trade plate application and asked how long it is likely to take and they said it is one of these things that is ongoing and can take some time

We have this crop up now and again, there is no way around it, you have to do it at DVLA, why not wait until you sell the car and use the customers name and insurance so avoid adding another keeper. I would get yourself some trade plates for test drives etc

On the subject of Trade plates, I've heard that some VRO's are asking for written proof from local councils to approve trade plates from home traders address Undecided

They certainly are, currently attempting to get around this myself at the moment after our application was declined until "Written Permission" from the council was provided....will keep everyone informed as to how we get on.  Sad

When I had plates I had a mechanic that had a nice big workshop and we used that address. Having him on board with the application gave it much more credability. Although he could have used them I had them most of the time. The whole experience from then on was a nightmare. I used to dread using them, always being pulled up. OK on the motorway but as soon as I got back into london. The stop me sign was illuminated on top of the car. This was seven or eight years ago, hopefully things are better. I must say I still remember going to pick them up at Chelmsford VRO, I felt like I'd earned my spurs, plates under my arm and glasses guide in my hand. The world was at my feet!  Wink Cheesy
